Jimmy decides to pursue his dreams of rodeo, while John and Governor Perry discuss saving the ranch by moving Jamie into the position of Interim Attorney General and for Kayce to step in as Livestock Commissioner.

Angela Blue Thunder admonishes Rainwater for being a slave to the white man's rules and tells him that the land must be retaken by force if necessary. All out war is unleashed on the Dutton family as they are one-by-one targeted for assassination.

Rip rescues John Dutton as he loses conciousness. John wakes up in a mental institution, where the doctors tell him that the whole thing about being a cattle rancher in Montana was a delusion. After months of treatment, he remembers that he was a corn farmer in Iowa. When he is released from the hospital, he finds that his wife has sold the farm and the new owner has plowed and replanted corn over his baseball field. The townspeople look at him funny when they pass him on the street and he tries to convince them that he is a cattle rancher who sees ghosts.
31 2 "Dances with Wolverines" Stephen Kay Taylor Sheridan
John is walking through a bad part of town, when he is caught in the crossfire of a shootout between two rival gangs. He starts to hallucinate that he is a Union soldier in the Civil War and he is being fired on by the Confederate lines. The gangs wipe each other out and John isn't hit. He walks out of town and comes across a hippy commune. Thinking they are Native Americans, he joins them and falls in love with someone who he thinks is a white woman living with the tribe, but is really a dressmaker's mannequin. He is seperated from them when he gets lost in the crowd at a Grateful Dead show.

In the previous episode, John has dropped acid at the Grateful Dead music festival. We now see John iamgine that he is Elliot Ness. Robert De Niro is also at the music festival, and when John sees him, he thinks De Niro is Al Capone. Ness (John) starts firing his tommygun at Capone (De Niro), but it is really just a Nerf gun that fires rainbow colored balls. De Niro doesn't notice a thing. John sees some vendors' booths selling drinks and he thinks it a bootleg whisy warehouse and starts kicking everything over. Festival security grabs John and brings him to the medical tent where he is sedated.
33 4 "The Farce is with You" John Dahl Taylor Sheridan
In the music festival medical tent, John spirals deeper into his dementia. He imagines he is a farmboy, John Cowpoker, on a desert planet who joined a rebel alliance against the Native American Empire, which wants to expand its casino monopoly to every planet in the universe. He confronts his evil nemesis, Darth Rainwater, in a laser pointer battle and Cowpoker loses vision in one eye. Darth Rainwater asks him to join the empire and Cowpoker says that he will never join the villain who killed his father. Rainwater says, "But John, I am your father". John cries "Nooooooooo!"
